Each of these downloadables are boots on the ground GPS trail data. Each link has two files, a .gpx for the GPS data, and a .kml, for Google Earth. They can be uploaded to your favorite device that has displayed TOPO map details. Many people now have maps on their phones, but I strongly suggest using a hand-held GPS unit, as they are much more reliable for satellite reception. Cell phones are still limited for coverage in the backcountry.
The nice thing about the .kml file, is that loading it into Google Earth gives you the ability to preview the entire trail in 3D, so you can get an idea of the terrain and features that you will be seeing when you’re there! We use this a lot to plan off trail scrambles, etc, to lakes and mountains that may not be on the beaten path. Give it a try!!!
Also, you’ll notice, that several of these trails don’t match exactly what the maps show for trail locations. That’s because, unfortunately, many trails have been re-routed because of floods, river re-routes, road wash-outs, etc…So, as of the date that each of these were collected, it is the most recent of trail beta!
And, as always, here is the inevitable disclaimer…Only wander into the backcountry fully prepared, and be advised that any thing can happen once you leave the trailhead to begin your adventure, so I cannot guarantee that you will have the same experience that we had, use my GPS trails only as a guide for your most excellent adventure!!!
